~/$ unshittify --list --all
You bought it.
Make it yours.
The hardware still works. The software is in the way. This is a log of people fixing that: TVs with sane home screens, printers talking to modern Macs, appliances brought back after their cloud died, old laptops on a new OS.
Most were built with a coding assistant on top of years of open-source work. Call it undoing enshittification, one device at a time.

01 // the log
A public repo means the code exists. Whether it's safe is a separate question. Read the project's current docs before you buy hardware or flash anything.

001 RespiraBrother SKiTCH PP1 embroidery machine claude code public repo
Sends embroidery designs from a computer to the PP1 and shows machine status, offline, without the phone-app workflow. Built by Jan-Henrik Bruhn.
- ai
- Creator credits Claude Code with most of the implementation. Builds on Ink/Stitch and pystitch.
- caveats
- PP1 only. Check file, Bluetooth, browser and desktop requirements. Brother says the paid Artspira+ subscription is optional for the PP1, so what Respira replaces is the phone-app workflow.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
002 Kath Korevec's PP1 appBrother SKiTCH PP1, second, separate build chatgpt report original post
Kath Korevec built replacement software for her PP1 and reported that it worked. Separate project from Respira.
- ai
- ChatGPT, named in her original post.
- caveats
- First-person report. No public code found. The "mandatory subscription" version of this story that circulated is wrong: Artspira+ is optional and the free app imports compatible designs.
- evidence
- Creator report.
-
003 Clean Your TVAndroid TV / Google TV sets claude code public repo
Agent-guided debloat plus a simpler launcher for Android-based TVs. Inspects the device, takes backups, runs checks, and makes targeted changes per set instead of one script for all.
- ai
- A coding agent drives the inspection and changes. Creator uses Claude Code.
- caveats
- Android TV and Google TV are the main targets. Disabling the wrong package breaks features. A clean launcher does not mean tracking stopped. OS updates can undo changes.
- evidence
- Public project + independent owner report (TCL).
-
004 Arn0Samsung Q70B (2022, Tizen 6.5) claude code experimental repo
Custom home screen that puts the owner's apps and consoles first, driven by the normal remote. Developed in a browser preview, then moved to the TV.
- ai
- Built with Claude Code, per the creator.
- caveats
- One documented model. It replaces the home screen and nothing else. Tizen still runs underneath, and privacy is unchanged. Optional startup and Home-button changes touch undocumented settings.
- evidence
- Public experimental project + creator account.
-
005 Photo frame dashboardSkylight + cheap Android photo frames coding agents public write-up
Wes Bos repaired a Skylight frame's connectivity, then turned cheap Android frame hardware into a household dashboard on the kitchen counter.
- ai
- Coding agents for investigation and the dashboard build.
- caveats
- Lookalike frames ship different internals. Some mods need advanced device access. Repo uses sample data; wiring in real calendars and inboxes is on you, along with the security of doing so.
- evidence
- Walkthrough, video, public code.
-
006 Trifo Lucy local serverTrifo Lucy robot vacuum claude experimental repo
The cloud went quiet, so an owner wrote a local server and browser UI. Cleaning, docking, suction, scheduling and status work.
- ai
- Claude helped decode the protocol and write the server. The owner did the hardware work and testing.
- caveats
- Partial rescue. Map decoding and camera are unsolved. The author's unit is modified; don't assume a stock vacuum takes the same route.
- evidence
- Public experimental project + creator account.
-
007 YotwoYoto Player, 2nd gen claude code public repo
Replacement firmware that points the Yoto's physical controls at your own Audiobookshelf library. Optional NFC, local downloads.
- ai
- Claude Code for firmware and hardware mapping, on top of open-yoto and Adafruit work.
- caveats
- Beta. Install can mean opening the case and soldering. Yoto's paid catalogue stays locked. No Bluetooth headphones in the documented version.
- evidence
- Public project. Creator runs it daily on two players.
-
008 SmartThings washer driverSamsung WW10H9400EW washing machine claude public repo
The old app workflow was discontinued. The owner wrote a SmartThings Edge driver that talks to the washer locally through a compatible hub.
- ai
- Claude helped develop the driver. Running on the creator's own machine.
- caveats
- One confirmed model; other generations use other protocols. Smart Control still has to be enabled on the machine. The washer link is local, but the rest of SmartThings may still use the cloud.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
009 pixma-rsCanon G3010 scanner → macOS claude code public repo
A Rust bridge from the G3010's scan protocol to something macOS understands. Scans from the usual Mac apps.
- ai
- Claude Code for protocol analysis and the Rust implementation. Owner supplied packet captures and tested.
- caveats
- G3010 is the tested model. Other G-series machines are not automatically covered. Check current macOS requirements.
- evidence
- Public project + development write-up.
-
010 HP Laser on Apple SiliconHP Laser 100-series printers claude code public repo
A patched SpliX printing stack plus a USB helper gets HP Laser 100-series printers working on Apple Silicon Macs.
- ai
- Claude Code assisted. The fix adapts existing SpliX code rather than writing a driver from scratch.
- caveats
- Follow the exact model and macOS list in the repo. It fixes Mac compatibility. Ink and subscriptions are untouched.
- evidence
- Public project with install and compatibility docs.
-
011 Hello Sense revivalSense orb + Sleep Pill claude public write-up
Joseph Spurrier rebuilt a local stack for a dead sleep company's hardware: bedside orb, Sleep Pill and app, owner-run. Started from the company's own open-sourced code.
- ai
- Claude on the redevelopment, alongside weeks of human investigation, hardware recovery and testing.
- caveats
- Expect weeks of work. Creator reports end-to-end function. Restored sleep scores are not medically validated.
- evidence
- Detailed write-up + public code.
-
012 Smarter Coffee for Home AssistantSmarter Coffee Gen 1 claude code public repo
Home Assistant integration with local control, status and Wi-Fi setup for a coffee machine whose app is obsolete.
- ai
- Claude Code for protocol research, implementation, tests and setup tooling. Earlier community reverse-engineering underneath.
- caveats
- Tested on Gen 1, firmware 22. Local commands have no authentication; lock down your network.
- evidence
- Public project with a documented hardware test.
-
013 Cat printer, no stock appBluetooth thermal "cat printer" chatgpt report write-up
Mertol Kasanan reverse-engineered his printer's Bluetooth protocol after existing libraries didn't match his variant. Basic image output works.
- ai
- ChatGPT helped with the Bluetooth code. The write-up documents its wrong suggestions and the experiments that got past them.
- caveats
- Read it as a case study. It won't drive other cat printers as-is. Hardware variant matters. Higher-quality modes unresolved.
- evidence
- Technical write-up.
-
014 SommetOlder Suunto watches (Ambit 3, Traverse, Kailash) claude public repo
Activities, routes, settings and training features for Suunto watches stranded when Movescount shut down.
- ai
- Built with Claude on openambit and opensportsync.
- caveats
- Strongest coverage: Ambit 3, Traverse, Kailash on Android and Linux Mint. Other watches and desktops need checking. Bluetooth reliability is a known issue.
- evidence
- Public project + creator report.
-
015 Personal Sonos controllerSonos Arc + system claude code public repo
Browser controller with volume, sound presets, schedules and the shortcuts the owner uses daily.
- ai
- Claude Code, on top of node-sonos-http-api and Sonos's local control.
- caveats
- Official app still needed for firmware updates and some services. Noncommercial licence.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
016 OmarchyOlder Intel Macs → Arch Linux desktop coding agents public site
An opinionated Arch Linux desktop. On compatible Intel Macs it keeps the hardware in service with a different OS and workflow.
- ai
- Creator has described using coding agents in development. Linux and the upstream projects it bundles are not AI-built.
- caveats
- Check the exact Mac first. Audio, sleep and input vary. Install can wipe the drive. Apple Silicon ports are separate, evolving projects.
- evidence
- Official Mac guide + model-specific owner reports.

017 OpticFilm 8200i on LinuxPlustek OpticFilm 8200i film scanner (GL128 revision, USB 07b3:1825) claude code public repo
Christian Schaller wrote a Linux SANE backend for his Plustek film scanner: colour, gray, infrared and infrared dust removal, packaged for Fedora. He also built Negative Vibes, a GNOME app for scanning negatives and slides.
- ai
- Claude Code compared USB captures of the vendor's driver, run in a virtual machine, with the Linux driver's traffic. Claude also wrote Negative Vibes. He published the method as hw-harness.
- caveats
- Verified on one scanner. One frame per start, film holder positioned by hand, 35 mm only. Upstream SANE added this scanner in September 2026; he calls his backend a proof of concept.
- evidence
- Public code + detailed write-up.
-
018 PlxNativeLG webOS TVs (in daily use on a 2019 LG set) claude code public repo
GLinnik21's native Plex client for LG webOS TVs draws its interface on the GPU and plays video on the TV's own decoder. On his 2019 set the profile picker loads in about 3 seconds, against about 30 in the official app.
- ai
- Ghidra with Claude Code and Opus to reverse engineer LG's native media libraries; Claude Code, Opus, Fable and Codex for implementation, debugging, tests and review. He says the agent's code needed heavy architecture refactoring.
- caveats
- Video won't play on some 2019 sets with LG's k5lp or k3lp chips in Developer Mode. Developer Mode needs renewing or LG removes the apps. Nightly builds are untested on a TV. Unofficial; not affiliated with Plex or LG.
- evidence
- Public project (1.1K stars) + creator account.
-
019 Walkman NW-A820 homebrewSony Walkman NW-A829, Japanese model (also NW-A826 / NW-A828) claude experimental repo
manuaguirre9 built a homebrew player that boots alongside Sony's firmware: drag-and-drop music, 24-bit FLAC, Bluetooth headphones, podcasts over phone tethering and retro emulators. Deleting one folder restores the stock Walkman.
- ai
- The creator says Claude wrote most of the code. It builds on Rockbox nwztools and Sony's GPL source.
- caveats
- Experimental, tested on one Japanese NW-A829. International NWZ models are untested and the installer can't reach them yet. Installer is Windows only. Charge the battery first; you do this at your own risk.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
020 Bose SoundTouch revivalBose SoundTouch 20 + M5Stack Atom Lite (ESP32) claude + chatgpt public repo
Bose shut down the SoundTouch cloud in May 2026. Sergei Ponomarenko brought back internet radio and the six preset buttons with a small relay for the streams and ESP32 firmware that catches preset presses and replays them to the speaker.
- ai
- ChatGPT first, then Claude, wrote the relay and the ESP32 firmware and read the protocol specs. The creator says the key ideas were his and both AIs gave up at the decision points.
- caveats
- Spotify, Amazon Music and other cloud services are gone for good; AirPlay still works. The relay runs on a server you host. The display can show the station name or the stream can be saved as a preset, but not both at once.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
021 dumbtvAmazon Fire TV Edition TVs and Fire TV sticks (tested on Insignia and Toshiba sets) coding agent public repo
Muzzammil Yasin Sabuwala's Fire TV Edition set had 129 MB of free memory and a home screen of mostly ads. A coding agent cleaned it up over ADB. dumbtv packages that cleanup with an undo for every step, its own home screen and an on-device DNS filter.
- ai
- Built to be run by a coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini) that follows the repo's agent instructions. The creator's first post credits Claude or DeepSeek.
- caveats
- Amazon-protected packages can be blocked but not disabled. YouTube ads are not blocked. A few users reported bricked or half-finished sets; a factory reset removes everything dumbtv did. Not affiliated with Amazon.
- evidence
- Public project (1.7K stars), owner reports from about twenty TVs and sticks, press coverage.
-
022 Inkbird Bluetooth bridgeInkbird INT-12-BW / INT-14-BW meat thermometer + ESP32 claude public repo
Paul Faure documented his thermometer's Bluetooth protocol, including its authentication handshake, and built an ESPHome bridge that puts every probe and setting into Home Assistant.
- ai
- The README credits "significant collaboration from Claude". The hardest part, a two-stage CRC chain, was cracked with help from a decompile of the Android app.
- caveats
- Alarm channels and several settings reports are logged but not parsed. No Wi-Fi path. Only one Bluetooth connection at a time, so the phone app can't connect while the bridge does.
- evidence
- Public project; the creator reports weeks of daily use.
-
023 OpenSnekRazer Basilisk V3 X HyperSpeed and other Razer mice, on macOS codex public repo
Razer offers no Mac software for this mouse. gh123man built a native macOS app that sets DPI, lighting, button remaps and onboard profiles over Bluetooth or USB.
- ai
- Coding agents, mostly Codex, reverse engineered the Bluetooth spec: he captured packets while Razer's Windows software ran, then fed each capture to Codex to update the spec. He says he likely wouldn't have attempted it without one.
- caveats
- Support varies by device and connection; several devices are only contributor-validated. On some Bluetooth devices, settings reset when the mouse powers off.
- evidence
- Public project + Show HN post.
-
024 EcoFlow DELTA 3 as a UPSEcoFlow DELTA 3 power station + Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W claude public repo
alanstrok made his power station act as a standard NUT UPS server over Bluetooth, so Unraid, Synology and other NUT clients shut down cleanly on low battery. No EcoFlow cloud.
- ai
- Heavy AI pair-programming with Claude for the protocol reverse engineering, the NUT plumbing and Bluetooth debugging, per the creator.
- caveats
- The encrypted Bluetooth protocol is reverse engineered, so a firmware update could break it. DELTA 3 only. The handshake needs your EcoFlow user ID once, used locally. Use at your own risk.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
025 Audeze Maxwell parametric EQAudeze Maxwell gaming headset (PlayStation version) claude code public repo
Aquaspaces writes a full parametric EQ, up to 10 filters, into the headset's own custom preset slots. It stays on the headset over the dongle, USB-C and Bluetooth, with no firmware flash.
- ai
- Claude Code and Codex for the reverse engineering and the app, per the creator.
- caveats
- Shelf and pass filters are experimental. Editing doesn't work over Bluetooth, and the Audeze app must be closed. Xbox and Maxwell 2 versions are untested; Maxwell 2 ANC is not supported. Builds are unsigned.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
026 Norman shutters for Home AssistantNorman PerfectTilt motorised plantation shutters + Norman hub claude code public repo
Tom Wilkie built a Home Assistant integration and Python client for his shutters: open or closed, tilt angle and battery, with the hub found automatically on the network.
- ai
- Claude Code wrote the client from API calls he captured with HTTP Toolkit, then the integration, and debugged session-expiry and discovery bugs. He had started the library with ChatGPT two years earlier.
- caveats
- It works because the iOS app's traffic wasn't encrypted. No licence file in the repo, so check before reusing the code.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
027 Dell webcam and Elgato light on LinuxDell UltraSharp Webcam 4K (WB7022) and Elgato Key Light claude public write-up
Christian Schaller rebuilt Dell's Windows-only webcam settings app for Linux, integrated with PipeWire, and wrote a GNOME Shell extension with a settings app for his Elgato Key Light.
- ai
- Claude rebuilt the webcam app from screenshots of the Windows app and pulled the USB property values out of the Windows binaries. For the light, Claude updated an old extension for current GNOME and wrote the settings app.
- caveats
- Dell's software features such as background removal are not implemented. The Elgato app covers most of what the Windows app does.
- evidence
- Public code + write-up.
-
028 ftape, modernisedQIC-80 floppy-controller and parallel-port tape drives claude code public write-up
Dmitry Brant brought the 25-year-old Linux ftape driver up to date as a loadable module, so his old tape drives run on Xubuntu 24.04 for data recovery instead of a CentOS 3.5 machine.
- ai
- Claude Code replaced outdated kernel APIs by feeding compiler output back into itself and helped diagnose hardware communication from dmesg logs. He says it would not have been possible without his own kernel knowledge, and it took several manual fixes.
- caveats
- Works only with the same limited set of floppy-controller chipsets as the original driver. Verified on his own drives and still being tweaked.
- evidence
- Public code + write-up.
-
029 FreeDSP StudioMoondrop DUSK-SP USB-C DSP cable (also MAY, FreeDSP and other Walkplay-chip dongles) claude code public repo
EffectiveEquivalent's desktop EQ editor writes straight to the cable's onboard DSP over USB. It gives fractional-dB gain where the stock app shows whole dB, and adds a preamp.
- ai
- From the README: "The reverse engineering, hardware testing and decisions were mine; Claude wrote most of the code." A few hours of work.
- caveats
- The README lists which devices are tested on real hardware; others rely on the maker's own data. Linux builds are untested with a real cable. Windows shows an unknown-publisher warning.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
030 TR-8S StudioRoland TR-8S drum machine (firmware 2.51), on Linux claude code public repo
ideaCompany's web studio talks to the TR-8S over its reverse-engineered SysEx protocol, mirrors the machine live, and includes an assistant that builds grooves on the hardware using your own Claude subscription.
- ai
- Most of the code was written with Claude Code, per the creator, who tested every claim against the real hardware.
- caveats
- Linux only (ALSA raw MIDI). The tutor mode he cares about most isn't built yet. Protocol claims are marked as verified or unverified.
- evidence
- Public project + creator account.
-
031 XZ ModsPioneer DJ XDJ-XZ controller codex + claude code experimental repo
OpticMystic's custom firmware loads into RAM from a USB stick and adds stems playback and UI themes to the XDJ-XZ. A power cycle returns it to stock.
- ai
- Mostly Codex and Claude Code. Both sometimes refused work they saw as reverse engineering, so he also used Gemini.
- caveats
- Experimental and still buggy. Four-deck mode broke audio routing. Stems need the same USB setup as the CDJ mod that uses OverCue. The stem builder is a beta and not hardware-qualified.
- evidence
- Public experimental project + creator account.
-
032 Roborock Local ServerRoborock robot vacuums (most models; Q7-class unsupported) claude (commits) public repo
Luke Lashley, who maintains the Roborock integration in Home Assistant, runs a copy of Roborock's cloud backend on your own network. Vacuums keep live maps and local control without the internet, and nothing has to be rooted or opened.
- ai
- The README doesn't mention AI. The commit history lists Claude as co-author on 15 of 126 commits, and Copilot on others.
- caveats
- Firmware updates and schedules don't work; routines and scenes do. Camera streaming needs a TURN relay and is verified on two models. China-market units don't work outside China. Setup needs a domain you control, local DNS rewriting and an SSL certificate.
- evidence
- Public project (1.2K stars) + Show HN post.
-
033 OsmosisDJI Osmo Nano, Osmo Pocket 3 / 4, Osmo Action 5 Pro / 6 cameras claude (commits) public repo
Konrad Iturbe reverse engineered DJI's camera protocol to build an Android app that downloads photos and video from Osmo cameras without DJI's Mimo app, SDK, login or activation.
- ai
- Not stated in the README or the creator's post. The commit history lists Claude as co-author on 258 of 366 commits.
- caveats
- Other Osmo models are untested or in progress; drone offload is verified on the Mavic 3 only. Not on Google Play; install from F-Droid or GitHub releases. Not affiliated with DJI.
- evidence
- Public project + Show HN post + press review.

02 // about
Useful things should stay useful.
unshittify logs people making the products they own work for them: replacing interfaces, restoring functions after an app or cloud disappears, giving old hardware a new job.
For each entry we ask what the owner got back, whether someone else could repeat it, and what the catch is.
The name nods to Cory Doctorow's Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It (MCD/Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2025). He explains how it happens. This site collects people undoing it on hardware they own.
+ in scope
- Documented improvements to hardware someone owns
- Working alternatives to abandoned or restrictive software
- New jobs for old hardware
- Open-source routes to longer life, AI or not
- Labelled experiments that teach something
− out of scope
- Piracy, stolen credentials, other people's devices
- "Clean launcher = no tracking" claims
- "AI did it all" stories that erase the people and projects underneath
- Dangerous mods sold as weekend wins
